Keep Your Chase Rust-Free & Your Chimney Water-Free With A Quality Chase Cover!
Prefabricated or factory-built chimneys may be different from their masonry counterparts, but they still require proper care and protection. One of the most important protective elements on a prefabricated chimney system is the chase cover.
What Is A Chase Cover?
Every chimney, whether masonry or factory-built, needs a protective covering at the top to prevent water and animal intrusion. On a masonry chimney, this cover is referred to as the chimney crown — but in the prefabricated world, we call it a chase cover, because it sits at the top of the “chase” or enclosure protecting the chimney system.
Like the crown, the chase cover seals out moisture, animals, and debris, and works to direct water away from the chimney and off of the roof. Unfortunately, not all chase covers are created equal, and many just can’t handle the wear and tear of time and the elements.
Signs It’s Time To Replace Your Chase Cover
One of the most obvious signs that it’s time to replace your chase cover is if you’re noticing rust streaks down the sides of your chase. Another sign (this one can be particularly upsetting) is water or rust in your firebox. Of course, the best way to know if your chase cover is nearing the end of its service life is to schedule an annual inspection. During an inspection, we’ll check your chase cover for any dents, rust, or signs of erosion so you can replace it before you have a rust-stained chase or a water-damaged firebox.
Chase Cover Material Options
Chase covers are available in stainless steel and copper. Copper is typically the priciest option, but it will last and last, year after year. Stainless steel is also an incredibly durable option, and is a favorite among homeowners because of its longevity and sleek look.
